I am at the point in my life when everyone is pressuring me about what I want to do with my life. With graduation just around the corner, I’m starting to feel the pressure of “the real world” weighing down on me.
I haven’t applied for any jobs, I don’t have a portfolio, I don’t even have a resume, but for some reason I’m most worried about how much I’m not panicking. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect to be hired right out of college based on pure charm alone. I’ll probably even have to create a resume and a portfolio sooner or later, but right now I am completely inspired to not get a full time job.
OK hold on, I know that sounds crazy, and I don’t want to just graduate to become homeless, I swear. What I really want to do is open my own business. Something simple and stable to being with, and then move on to bigger and better things when I’m ready. I’ve been reading a lot of inspiring blogs lately as well as Seth Godin’s Linchpin. I agree with a lot of what I’m reading and I feel like I have been thinking that way for most of my life. Basically, the faux security of a “full time job” is equal to or less than the drastically underplayed security you achieve from working for yourself.
Now many of these blogs I’ve been reading are basically personal-development blogs that also talk about how they create enough profit (from their online presence) to make a living. They probably make more money than I’d make getting a full time job! Although I also believe that some of them just spout delusions of grandeur because people eat that shit up. I don’t think I’ll be able to create a life plan out of reading inspiring blog posts, but it’s good to keep morale up. Wow, I’m glad they don’t read my blog.
So here’s my plan: I want to work really hard at creating something of value, build myself an online platform, make a little money, get a little recognition and then use whatever I’ve got to open a coffee shop or coworking space.
Vague, isn’t it? I know. But that’s part of what this blogging thing is all about for me. Getting my thoughts out so I can sort it all out and maybe one day get helpful responses from my readers (just gotta get readers first ;).
