It is 1:02 in the morning and I don’t want to sleep because I have gotten a burst of motivation! I was about to go to bed when I decided to surf around the internet looking at business books. I am currently reading Seth Godin’s Linchpin, which is inspiring enough, but I want to read more. So down on Amazon, I started to eat up all the “Look Inside” free previews and even just reading reviews and now I’m more inspired than ever about creating and about the future.
It’s weird, but one of the reasons I don’t want to go to sleep is because I’m afraid that when I wake up the motivation and fresh outlook on life will be gone. Chances are, this is true. In my experience, motivation comes in bursts. Like when I watch an amazing movie, I want to go out and make one better. Or when I read an awesome book, I want to immediately sit down and write. But the motivation always fades and it fades fast.
There has to be some way to keep the motivation up and always up, right? I know it’s a silly sounding question, but maybe because of that fact it is always treated as cliche and never gets properly addressed. I would like to be motivated all the time. That would be awesome and I know it is possible.
Outcomes:
The product of my motivation (besides this half-asleep-written blog post) is
a) setting a deadline for myself of May 1 as the completion date of the Blurb book of my 365 project that I have been working on forever.
b) Creating a “Goals” page on this site documenting my short and longterm goals with this site and in my life. Think of it like a dual mission statement.
I believe it’s true that in order to really motivate yourself you need to set deadlines, strict deadlines. That is the only way things get done. My film project that was just completed for a super strict deadline was the product of three nearly sleepless nights in a row, but in the end it got done. What’s the point of staying up all night to work on something that doesn’t have a deadline? It makes no sense.
Here’s to hoping the motivation lasts through the night and into the morning :)
